A very rare WW1 German Iron Cross 2nd Class award document to Grefrieten Franz Bernkopf, a machine gunner in the 16th Infantry Division, 11th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Machinegun Company dated April 4, 1918.  Bernkopf was 21 year old at the time of the award.

We did some on-line research and found four original post WW1 German unit rosters/ledgers which give more detail about Bernkopf. He was born on 21 September 1897, in Rashsmanudorf Bezirksamt Vilshofen Bayern (Bavaria).  These documents show he was 1.58m tall and the dates when he received his typhus and cholera shots amongst other information. His parents are also identified. These records were made during WW1 and are unit rosters.
