We are offering a research service to help identify who that World War 1 German soldier was that is named in a helmet, gas mask, uniform, document, dog tag or grouping you have.  These records can be invaluable in creating provenance for your militaria. Not only does it make the item much more interesting but it also greatly increases its value when you have a paper trail that matches.

We decided that this was a good service to offer when we began to research Franz Bishkopf. He is the soldier named on a WW1 Iron Cross award document we have listed here. We found a number of important records related to him.

We have access to a large archive of on-line records relating to soldiers who fought for Germany in the Great War.  These include unit rosters, lists of casualties, pension and veteran records, lists of officers etc. We have also found birth, marriage and death records for some WW1 German service members.  It seems bureaucrats in Germany were as diligent as bureaucrats in the United States. The site we use is constantly adding new databases.

Our modest rate is based on 30 minutes research time.  We have found that in 30 minutes we can typically either find most of what we believe is relevant or determine that nothing is currently available.  We will spend that time diligently searching for all relevent documents. We will let you know if we have to go beyond the time allocated.

Your documents will be mailed in a flat rate priority mail envelope with tracking.  We can also email them to you as a jpeg or PDF.

We can not guarantee that records exist but will make a valiant effort to find your man.  Keep in mind that these records are now at least 100 years old or close to it.  Germany is making efforts to make these records available on line but one must have a subscription to access them.

To begin we will need a first and last name.  If your soldier had a very common name his Regiment number will be helpful in narrowing down who he was.

We may be adding research services for British service members in the near future so do not hesitate to ask about this service as well.
