This is a Japanese Type 94 Mark 5 wireless radio transmitter.
This particular receiver was Manufactured at Kazuaki Arsenal Ordnance Army in February of Showa 17 (1942) according to the dataplate.
The red and white plate indicate “military secret.”
This type of wireless radio was used in single seater Japanese aircraft to communicate with other aircraft in the area according to some.
It was also used at the regimental, battalion and company level in the Japanese Army to communicate in the battle area.
The range was between 3 miles for voice mode or up to 7 miles for continious wave mode.
We have seen these with metal shoulder strap attachment hardware. This one however has recesses on the back that seem consistent with mounting in an aircraft rather than on one’s back. We are not sure as these seldom come up for sale.
This particular radio is an excellent condition. It appears to be complete with all knobs, switches and dials.
The wonderful Kanji everywhere will make this a centerpiece of your Japanese aviation or ground forces Display.
We have not tested the radio to see if it works. However, from reading forums about Japanese military radios, replacement parts are standardized amongst HAM type radios.
The US Intelligence Manual on this radio receiver is available on line in PDF format.
