The the Japanese 61st infantry regiment was part of the 24th Japanese division.
It was destroyed in battle in the Philippines by the US Army.
This is an earlier photo showing the soldier wearing the early high collar tunic with regimental Cyphers. This man, most likely would have been an NCO by the time he was shipped to the Philippines.
He is wearing a leather belt around his waist, along with Type 30 bayonet with leather frog.
