This is the standard World War II Japanese naval pattern, split front, ammunition pouch. It holds 30 rounds of either 6.5 mm or 7.7 mm ammunition.
The split in the front of the ammunition pouch gives away the fact that this was navy issue. Army issue did not have a split in the front.
Underneath the flap, as you can see, are Japanese arsenal marked Kanji. They appear to be Showa 14, which is 1939.
This split front pattern was unique to Naval contract frontal ammunition pouches. Â Therefore, this would have been worn by a member of the naval landing, force or shore bases naval personnel.
