Now is the time to set up a display that represents a critical part of Pacific War history.

This represents what a shore based Japanese sailor wore as the US was closing in on his homeland. Because resupply became impossible due to the Naval Blockade of each island, the uniform on a sailor’s back would have be worn each and every day until the invasion with zero hope of a fresh set.  In the interim, the sailor would be tasked with all day working details cutting down palm trees, building bunkers, digging trenches and spider holes etc. , all while toiling away in the Pacific Sun, rain and heat.

This is a really nice ensamble consisting of the following:

  1. CAP – Cotton with rare black anchor; named on the outside & inside. Chinstrap present. IJN Depot stamp is present but feint.
  2. TUNIC – Cotton canvas with pleated upper pockets & wooden buttons; IJN Depot stamp is present.
  3. SHIRT – Cotton linen with long tail in back. IJN Depot stamp is present
  4. TROUSERS – Cotton Canvas with two rear pockets and belt loops.  IJN Depot stamp is present
  5. LEGGINGS – Cotton weave with web tape ties.  IJN Depot stamp is present
  6. RUCKSACK  – Cotton Canvas with shoulder straps & drawstring. IJN Depot stamp is present with Sailor’s name.
  7. RATE – Leading Seaman, Engineer. This was in the pocket of the tunic. These were simply tacked on with about four stitches so they could be removed for laundering.  They were often removed for actual combat.

Each piece is marked with a Japanese Naval Depot stamp as shown.

Each piece is in a similar shade of sun faded sea green. It is obvious that the sun and sea air faded the exterior to a pleasing tan. The interior of each piece has a green hue, which is the original color.

Each piece has that salty, battlefield pick up, use and condition. It will seem as if  this ensemble came off of one IJN Sailor (It did not) but you will be asked if it did!

You will not find a ready-made NLF display like this for sale anywhere.  If you went to gather up the individual pieces, you would arguably not be able to find similar color, patterns or condition, in many years.

We have leather belt sets, a canteen and a haversack to complete the ensemble.
