Here is a fantastic, 1944, Japanese naval landing force, base force or defense force four button tunic.

It has the rate of a semen third class from the engineering department.

The “engineering” emblem has been hand-tacked down permanently to the rate. In addition, the bar for a 3rd class seaman was simply painted on.  It seems this sailor was rushed to the front wearing seaman recruit rank (no bar) either before he had time to complete his training or there was a shortage of rates upon graduation from recruit training.

The tunic has all wooden buttons. This is correct for mid to late 1944 made tunics. Brass buttons were dwindling in the supply chain. Based on the fact the pockets were made with pleats, it is not likely 1945 production. By 1945 pleats and brass buttons were not being added to IJN land combat tunic.

On the interior, the Navy stamp Indicating the depot from which it was made is present but is illegible.

What makes this tunic very special is that it has a great deal of Kanji inside. This  likely indicates the sailor’s  name, unit and service number.

The color is green, which was the prescribed color for naval shore-based uniforms.

There are hand repairs around the collar. This is consistent with a uniform that was worn continuously due to resupply issues on many Japanese held islands.

Measures to about size 38.
