In March 1938, the Japanese military gave its contractors authorization to use leather substitutes in the manufacture of enlisted belts, front and rear ammo pouches, and bayonet frogs. They were not meant to replace leather but were approved as substitutes to meet production if leather was not available.

This allowance was due to the need to equip tens of thousands of Japanese conscripts for the rapidly expanding war in China and the inability of contractors to procure sufficient high-quality leather to manufacture belts, ammo pouches, bayonet frogs and holsters. As a result, two manufacturing substitutes were authorized.

As a result, this belt is correct for any WW2 Japanese Army or Naval Landing Force display from 1938 to 1945.
