This is the Standard issue WWII mess tin for all Imperial Japanese Army Enlisted personnel.

This one is stamped Showa 16 for 1941.

It is complete with the inner tray.

These were used by individual soldiers to cook rice, soup and other rations, including tea, by suspending the bottom by the wire handle over an open flame.

They were also used to collect food in a serving line if a unit kitchen was established.

These were strapped onto the outside center of the canvas “octopus” backpack.

This one shows actual field use. It fits together just like it did when it left the factory in 1941!
