WW2 Japanese Army Enlisted Tunic Captured in the Field

Here is the standard issue Imperial Japanese Army summer tunic worn in WW2.

These were worn in every Pacific Battle from Guadalcanal to Okinawa.

This tunic is made of cotton with brown bakelite buttons.

This is truly a captured piece. We have never seen one like it. There are two locations inside the tunic which bear the standard US applied rubber stamp. The stamp says Inspected in the Field – Passed By – Intelligence. One is in upper interior and the other inside a sleeve/armpit. Obviously the Marine or Soldier who captured it wanted to take it home. This stamp made it possible.

This one is cut for summer use with a permanent vent under each arm pit and another vent just below with a flap that opens and closes with a green button.

It also has a loop on the left hip which passes through the hole in the center of the bayonet frog. Since suspenders were not worn in the IJA, having the bayonet loop there helped support the heavy leather belt with ammo pouches worn around the waist and kept the bayonet in a uniform position.

On the interior left front there is a pocket for carrying the Japanese Army Enlisted Identification book.

This tunic is well marked in Japanese indicating size Large. It is dated Showa 18 (1943) and is marked from the Tokyo Depot.

Condition is excellent, unused with some tiny stains on the shoulders and interior. The exterior stains would be covered by pack straps, a canteen harness strap and a haversack strap while on display.
