A great many Pacific Islands were garrisoned with veteran Japanese troops who were rushed in from China on cargo ships as the Japanese tried to slow the US advance on the mainland.  These troops brought everything they owned as they departed China for the Pacific War. This bring back is a cotton gift-wrap presentation cloth, called Furoshiki, which says:

“North China Area Army, Yamada Unit, Kono Unit, Funayama Unit, Second Lieutenant Kozaburo Ishiguro, April 15, consolation gift.”

Furoshiki (風呂敷) are traditional Japanesewrapping  cloths used to wrap and/or to transport goods and to present gifts.

This cloth initially carried some kind of gift but was later picked up by a Marine or GI who liked the look of it.
