As World War II is coming to a closing in Germany, leather was in short supply as were other raw goods used to manufacture war material.
As a result, the Germans came up with a product called prestoff. This is basically paper pulp, pressed together with resin and heat. It certainly did not last as long as leather, but on the exterior, it appeared to be leather.
