Scarves were worn by many Viet Cong Main Force units. They could be awarded in lieu of a medal for a deed done well.

They were also worn as a form of recognition in a country where many wore black cotton PJs. One could also argue that various colors meant different status, such as NCO or Officer or classes of award. I have often thought that the number of bands on the bottom of the scarf was a way to distinguish amongst the classes of awards.

They were primarily black and white, with various numbers of red bands on the bottom.

Occasionally they were hand embroidered.

They were also worm by communist forces in Cambodia and Laos. After 1975, they are not seen in the SRV being worn by military personnel.

Regardless, they look great tied around the neck.
