There is no greater prize then capturing an enemy’s battalion, Regiment or division flag in battle.
The Viet Cong knew this desire and wanted to use that desire to take advantage of a unsuspecting G.I.
Take a look at the star in this flag! What is wrong with?
Well, it’s not a very good star is it? Compare that to the number is 267 in the upper corners. They are both very well done compared to the star. The star is lopsided, crooked & fubar. There is no excuse for a seamstress who can make a beautiful flag, including perfect number 267’s yet mess up the star so badly.
Any Viet Cong in the area would know, don’t touch that flag because it’s attached to a booby trap.
Conversely, an American who walks up on it or a South Vietnamese, might not see the distinction right away. Then it would be too late.
Booby trap flags like this are very uncommon.
In fact, this is the first time we’ve seen one with a unit designation on the flag. This unit, the 267 Viet Cong Main Force Battalion was actually involved in many, many, battles between 1965 and 1972.
Flag is 3 ft 4 inches long by almost 3 feet high.
The 267th Main Force Battalion of the National Liberation Front operated in IV Corps in the Mekong Delta from 1965 to 1975. By March 1972 it had been converted into the 267B Sapper Bn and was based near Dinh Tuong.
This battalion fought the ARVN, the 9th Division, 11th ACR, 173rd Airborne Brigade, 82nd Airborne Division, the US Marines, US Navy Riverine Force and the USAF Security Police at various times.
Originally formed with local South Vietnamese, northern-born NVA regulars were infiltrated as replacements into the battalion over time as its ranks were decimated in combat.
This unit’s first major engagement with free world forces began on New Year’s Day, 1966. Operation Marauder was an operation conducted by the 173rd Airborne Brigade and the 1st Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment (1 RAR) and a New Zealand artillery unit. in the Plain of Reeds, Mekong Delta. An article in the January 14, 1966, issue of Time magazine aptly summarized the significance of Marauder: ‘Members of the 173rd Airborne swept out in Operation Marauder into the Plain of Reeds in the Mekong Delta. Penetrating an area so thoroughly held by the VC that government troops had not ventured in for six months.”
