Towards the end of WWII the Army and Marine Corps stopped ordering Carlisle dressings in metal tins. This was a cost savings when ordering hundreds of thousands or a million dressings. The Army carlisle switched to one in a waxed cardboard sleeve.
The Navy Marine issue switched to a tough foil like pouch. This one has a US Navy stock number on it 2-396 on the front. All Navy medical supplies like this were given a stock number which began with 2. The Navy ordered all medical supplies, including Carlisle dressings as the USMC did not have a Medical Corps.
