In March 1965, the 3rd Bn 9th Marines 3/9 was the FIRST U.S. infantry unit to arrive in RVN.
Battalion Landing Team (BLT) 3/9 landed on March 8, 1965 at Da Nang’s Red Beach Two. This marked a significant shift from an advisory role to direct U.S. military participation in the Vietnam War, as BLT 3/9 and elements of the 9th Marine Expeditionary Brigade (MEB) were tasked with defending the newly established air base at Da Nang.
This is the yearbook for 3rd Bn., 9th Marines. It contains all the relevant information and photos for this historic Marine Unit, down the the names and photos of each assigned Marine and Sailor (Corpsmen) in 1964 & 1965 and their home addresses.
We have never seen one, let alone one for sale, from 3/9.
Battalion Landing Team BLT 3/9 consisting of three rifle companies, weapons and HQ Co. disembarked and made a textbook amphibious assault. Their mission was to secure Da Nang airbase which was constantly being attacked by the VC.
Subsequently, in typical Marine fashion, BLT 3/9 soon began to patrol around Da Nang airbase. These local patrols and subsequent reinforcement from other units became the genesis of all future ground combat in RVN.
Whether you collect Marine Yearbooks, Marine Militaria, or just Vietnam War in general, this will be the cornerstone of your collection.
Included are two documents prepared by 3/9. One describes the history of Vietnam and another describes the Viet Cong, terrain etc.
Also included is a November, 1963 newspaper, the Pendelton Scout obviously from a member of 3/9.
