Here is a Viet Cong Main force reed helmet made from bamboo wicker and palm fronds. This is one of the only such helmets we have seen made from both palm fronds and bamboo wicker.
Each step in the construction of this helmet took a few to several hours.
These types of helmets were standard amongst the Viet Minh during the French Indochina war. They are basically copied from French style sun helmets of the era.
The Vietcong main force units also wore this style of helmet throughout the 1960s.
VCMF helmets were village made by basket weavers. As such, the shape and construction techniques varied all over the “Liberated Zone.” These were an artisan’s attempt to provide something of a uniform piece of headgear in the Company, Battalion or Regiment.
This type of Vietnamese communist headgear is extremely rare because very few survived the long trip home from Vietnam in a duffel bag and the many decades sitting around since then.
This is a wonderful display item for your collection. It can be used in your Viet Minh display or your Viet Cong main force display.
It has been over a year since we added one to sell.
Do not let this one get away!
