WW2 Japanese Navy Landing Force LTjg Tunic

This is a Naval Officer’s tunic in cotton canvas.  We say later war in that it was made without pleats on the pockets. This feature was dropped in late 1944 or early 1945. However, it retains high quality brass buttons vs wooden buttons found on late war enlisted tunics.

IJN officers were given a uniform allowance to purchase their uniforms. Officer’s uniforms were made by uniform manufacturers, not the Navy Depots. These manufacturers followed Navy regulations. Uniforms were sold on base as well as at retail stores off base.  The materials were usually higher quality than IJN Depot made enlisted uniforms.

The markings on this tunic are only 第 1 號 which means Size 1.

We have photographed these markings next to two other later war IJN tunics made at Navy Depots. As you can see, this tunic is not similarly marked.
