WW2 Japanese Map of New Guinea & New Britain

This is a field size, very RARE, Japanese map of all of New Guinea (Australian & Dutch) & New Britain.

This was location of an epic, three and a half year, battle between Japan vs the US & Australia.

The campaign lasted from 23 January 1942 – 15 August 1945. Aussies, U. S. Marines, as well as US Army soldiers fought on these islands. The Navy and Coat Guard fought in the surrounding ocean.

The Japanese military lost 127,600 on New Guinea alone, mostly to disease & starvation.

WW2 Japanese maps are extremely rare.  Regulations required them to be immediately turned over to Intelligence for exploitation.  Servicemen complied as their life, as well as their buddies lives, depended on rapid exploitation.

This map folds neatly into a size that fits easily in your map case. Open, it measures 45.5 by 25.5 inches.

This map is in Dutch & Japanese. It appears to be consistent with a Japanese adaptation of a captured Dutch map where the hand written legend is entirely in Japanese.
