When WW2 began the standard canteen had an aluminum cap just like the WW1 canteen.

In an effort to save aluminum for the war, a complete switch to plastic canteen caps was undertaken.

This is a example of a very early 1942 made canteen with aluminum cap.

These seldom appear and are correct for all early battles like Guadalcanal and North Africa.
