Here is an original WW2 Imperial Japanese Navy Helmet Cover made at the Yokosuka Naval Depot early in the war.

This is an early cover with wool disc and wool anchor on the front which is properly sewn to the exterior of the cover before the interior was installed.

This cover is named to “Sunahara” on the rear exterior and also on the interior as you can see.

It has a number 62882 on the interior. This is likely the service number of the sailor.

The other Katakana characters are “Yoshini” which is likely his first name.

The other number, 2 over 2, is likely the unit number. It is preceded by the character “fu.”  In looking over WW2 US manuals on Japanese military abbreviations, the closest we have come to this is a wire laying/communication unit.  Field telephones and telegraphs were used for the majority if communications amongst units in caves, bunkers, tunnels  in Japanese Naval land based forces.

You can see the Showa “Year 20” and the month of August in the “date of issue” field. This indicates, although early manufacture, it was not issued out until the final month of the war as the Japanese Navy converted all non-shipboard sailors to ground defense units.

These covers were not dated with the month and year of manufacture.

The tie string is original. The cover is sound, not dry-rotted, rusted out, repaired or torn. Just a nice solid color.

Because of its fine condition, this is a perfect candidate for restoration with an original wool anchor.
