Here is a very rare Japanese naval ground forces enlisted sailor’s battlefield pickup tunic. Some would even call this a Special Naval Landing Force item.

This tunic was made at Maizuru Depot, in April 1944, indicated by the Showa 19 date on the inside.

By late war the Navy uniforms were getting wooden buttons, like this tunic.

Underneath the pocket flap is a hand made name tag for MURATA Ryoichi.

The rate is for a seaman second class. It appears that the stripe on the Seaman’s rate was hand done with gold paint. This would have done been done when he was promoted from seamen Seaman second class. Re-supply of basic items like food and ammunition would’ve been a higher priority than resupply of new rates for newly promoted sailors. The chrysanthemum, denoting line sailor, is hand stitched on. A corresponding name tag for Murata Ryochi was found in the interior of the jacket. It fits perfectly over the top of the where the interior name tag was located. It could also be sewn to the front of the jacket, above the pocket.

This is a well used salty, battlefield pick up, tunic.

It also appears that another tag of some kind was on to the very front of the jacket as seen in the photographs.

Also, the interior of each pocket has hand sewn loops, possibly for a pen or pencil.

This is a late war tunic that has seen a great deal of sunlight, but still has a very visible navy black stamp on the inside of the flap.

Size is size 2 – medium.
