This canteen was obvious damaged by concussion, but not shrapnel. It was likely a 500 pound bomb in his vicinity.

Based on the paint wear pattern before the concussion, it had a cotton harness. The harness either was blown off or the capturing grunt took it out of the harness to keep just the canteen as a souvenir.

The cap would have been blown off from the pressure of the concussing water inside.

There is simply no way to replicate this destruction. Any tool used to try would have left a tool transfer mark.
